Hedge back on board at school

IT WAS about 20 years ago that pro surfer Nathan Hedge was a student at Manly Surf School, learning what it would take to make a career out of the sport.

This week, the popular North Narrabeen boardrider returned to the school – but this time as a coach.
Hedge, 35, is helping to coach the peninsula’s next generation of up-and-coming surfers this week and next week. Held at Long Reef, the school holiday clinics are aimed at grommets who are already capable of catching waves by themselves.

Yesterday was the first day of the clinics – attracting nearly 50 youngsters – and Hedge said there  was an emphasis on fun while the young surfers picked up some technical support along the way.

“It’s about having fun … learning without knowing it and fostering their confidence as well,” he  said.
The clinics run from 9am to noon, today until Friday and Mon-Thurs next week.
Suitable for children aged 6-18, bookings are required.
Next week there is an additional option for children to also train at the school’s High Performance  Surf Coaching facility in Cromer.
